A quick guide to common terms
Epilepsy: A neurological disorder; nerve cell activity in the brain is disrupted, causing seizures
Seizure: A sudden excessive discharge of nervous-system electrical activity
Focal seizure: A partial seizure originating in a part of the cerebral cortex, involving motor, sensory, autonomic or other symptoms, which may progress to a generalized seizure
EEG: Electro-encephalogram; a test often performed to diagnose epilepsy, using electrodes to record brain activity
EMU: Epilepsy monitoring unit; a specialized place designed to evaluate, diagnose and treat seizures.
PO: Taken by mouth
NPO: Nothing by mouth
TID: Three times per day
QID: Four times per day
