How to Navigate An Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
Emily Johnson, M.D., an assistant professor of neurology at the Epilepsy Center at Johns Hopkins Medicine, offers a few tips for a smooth experience at an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU).
Plan ahead. Before you check in, ask about the facility’s visitation policies and let your family and friends know. Also bring some form of entertainment.
Don’t panic. Make sure you understand what your doctors hope to learn during your stay. And just remember that an EMU is one of the safest places to have a seizure.
Be informed. Before being discharged, ask whether there will be any changes to your medications.
Follow Up. You should also ask about the results of your stay and discuss next steps with your doctors and nurses.
Bring support. It’s a good idea to have a family member, friend, or caregiver by your side. They can provide support and serve as your co-advocate.
