Understanding Diagnosis and Treatment Plans

For people living with chronic conditions, it can be difficult to process and remember all the health information your doctor shares during a visit. In fact, research shows people can immediately forget up to 80 percent of the information they get from healthcare providers during appointments.

 

Understanding next steps about diagnosis and treatment doesn’t have to be a challenge. This video from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) offers tips on how to better understand and remember what your doctor tells you. As Dr. Matthew Memoli at NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease says, “there’s no such thing as a dumb question in the doctor’s office.” Remember you can ask questions of anyone your doctor, nurse, pharmacist, or even the receptionist to make sure you understand the information you’re given. Whether it’s a new diagnosis or a change in your treatment, asking questions can help make sure you’re on the right path.
